Bell Network is an electronic music performance for mobile phone ensemble. Audience members download a small web-based music application. Noöpticon, as conductor, sends data to the phones to guide and shape the performance, but the audience decides the notes to play, the time division to take, and the sound to make. Bass and effects audio support the phone ensemble, and a projected video provides instruction, gameplay, and realtime performance data.

The piece explores possibilities in improvisatory and naive music making, and emergent and collective behaviour. It reflects my practice creating virtual interfaces for solo and ensemble works, as well as my experience with software and systems design.

A live demo audience client is available for perusal at this link. Click START to begin audio output, and explore the interface. An automated conductor guides a short sequence of chords. To replicate the ensemble effect, open the client in multiple browser tabs. If multiple clients are open, they automatically synchronize every thirty seconds.
